WebCenter Interaction 10gR4 (Neo) Now Available!

Today Oracle announced WCI 10gR4 through their blog and tech network. The problem is: the download isn’t available yet, and there’s already some conflicting information out there.

Following the instructions on the download page, you can see that you’re no longer supposed to find the download via the Oracle Software Delivery Cloud using the “Oracle BEA” Media pack, but the “Oracle Application Server 10g Release 3 (10.1.3) Media Pack”.

No 10.3.3 yet:

Aside from the conflicting information about the version being available and not being there, there’s more conflicting info after the break. Stay tuned, though, as I’m sure this’ll all be worked out soon, and we’ll keep you posted on new features and functionality!

Analytics is still a bit of a mystery. Here and here, the version for WebCenter Interaction is 10gR4 (aka, and WebCenter Collaboration is, but WebCenter Analytics is Fine, so Analytics didn’t get a full point release, that’s OK, right? The problem is, the Certification Matrix shows that Windows Server 2008 isn’t supported:

But, the online release notes say that Windows Server 2008 is supported. So here’s to hoping that’s just an oversight, and when we go to update our full Plumtree stack, we’re not going to be stuck with running Analytics on Windows Server 2003.

Even if Analytics is supported on the latest OS, there’s a bigger problem here. You’ll notice that Publisher is conspicuously absent – is THAT going to be supported in Windows Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008? I’m glad to see the new software is backwards-compatible with the older platforms, but almost every WCI customer from the Plumtree and BEA ALUI days uses Publisher. And Publisher has to connect to the WCI database. So if Publisher isn’t certified to run on the newer version of Windows or SQL Server, then where does that leave us if we want to do a platform upgrade of OS and DB?

I really hope for those clients who would like to do a full platform upgrade that we’re not going to have to deal with a Frankenvironment until there’s a Spaces migration plan.

I took a quick look at the documentation and didn’t find the section that deals with bugs that have been fixed, or enhancements in the new version. I expected to find it in the Release Notes. Any idea where that detail is?

  2. Matt Chiste says:

Good point Geoff – seems that for this version all we got was a list of things that were broken (http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23010_01/wci.1034/e22880/toc.htm#BAJGFGII), not fixed. I’ll update when/if I can find a list of bug fixes/enhancements.

I just got off the phone with Oracle support and they are saying this is not the new version. They are saying they had an issue with getting the new code out to the edelivery system. They are expecting it to be corrected by the end of the week.

There will not be any update for Publisher it has been code final for more than a year.

Brad, you’re right – I’ve heard the same thing; the update isn’t out quite yet, and Oracle jumped the gun in announcing it. It will be out soon enough – hopefully with some documentation on bug fixes as Geoff pointed out!

  4. Brad Styve says:

Ok, It appears that it is now in the e-delivery sytem. Should be three downloads.

Oracle WebCenter Interaction 10.3.3 for Microsoft Windows (32-bit and 64-bit)
Oracle WebCenter Collaboration 10.3.3 for Microsoft Windows (32-bit and 64-bit)
Oracle WebCenter Analytics for Microsoft Windows (32-bit) and x64 (64-bit)

    Enjoy everyone!

    • Matt Chiste says:

Indeed – good catch Brad! Wow, that’s a big download (1.5GB!). I’ll post some “first looks” in the coming days.

      • Brad Styve says:

Three installers to rule them all. Much cleaner, but requires more space to unpack the installs. So instead of having 15 installers now there are just three. I have had the Beta of this for awhile now. Several items added for Cloud Tagging and the like as well as integrated Wikis and Blogs built into Collaboration. My understanding is there are over 200 bug fixes also.
